Commencement Speech for National Taiwan University’s Class of 2018

English

Principals, teachers, distinguished guests, fellow students, good afternoon.

I am an international student at National Taiwan University and I’m honored to be with you. My name is Philip Chang. I’m from the MBA program in the School of Management. When I first arrived in Taiwan, I hardly spoke Chinese. Now I’m speaking Chinese with you. I want to share with the world what I learned at this university. But today, I just want to share one of these things with you.

I once heard this saying. Although the best schools are full of smart people, I am not the smartest person here. The smartest person here is not me. It’s you. The smartest person here is you.

Confucius said, “Walking among three people, I find my teacher among them. I choose that which is good in them and follow it, and that which is bad and change it.”

This also means, I’ve learned so much from my experience with you. All of you are my teachers. We must always keep learning from each other.

The sooner you accept this, the harder you will work to accomplish great things. Because you will owe it to yourself to do more, and to do better.

But as an alumnus of National Taiwan University, we must also:

  1. Combine our wisdom
  2. Share our strengths
  3. Ask everyone to do their best so we can solve problems together

This is how National Taiwan University students will change the world.

The world needs people like us. National Taiwan University has a wide variety of students. We have learned how to cooperate with people from all over the world. The world, needs courage and responsibility. Because of courage, we can overcome difficulties. We can move on.

Courage is the most important of all virtues. Without courage, other virtues are impossible. For example, it takes courage for Taiwanese students to work with international students in English. International students who come to Taiwan also need courage to communicate with Taiwanese students in Chinese.

  • Because of your courage, I have confidence in our future.
  • Because we have courage, we are able to determine our future.
  • Since all National Taiwan University students have this courage, we stand here today, having completed our studies, ready to contribute what we have learned.

Let’s go change the world, together.

Congratulations, Class of 2018.
